I have known Andrew from the 70s when he first came to Los Angeles. I knew his older brothers and sisters while I was going to the University of Washington. His oldest brother, David, was a Ph.D. student in the Physics department, which I joined as an undergraduate, and he helped me many times in physics. His third oldest brother, Simon, came to study in Seattle Pacific University, and his second oldest brother Philip was studying in Oregon. This family really impressed me; they were all geniuses. I did not meet Andrew until later when I went to Los Angeles for conferences, after migrating to Chicago in 1970.
In 1983, when brother Lee started the Chinese-speaking work, Andrew, Minoru and I became fulltime serving the Lord. I was in Chicago then. In April, 1984, when brother Lee came back from Europe, he held a series of conferences in New York. In the second conference, a Chinese-speaking one, I coordinated with Andrew a lot. After the conference, he and I drove a van from New York to Iowa, visiting scattered saints in different campuses. I had a good time getting to know him. He impressed me as a brother in God’s economy, purely living for His economy. His burden then was to fully follow brother Lee. When I quit my job in February, 1984, Andrew was a great help to me in learning how to serve the Lord by following brother Lee.
In 1986, I went to Taiwan for brother Lee’s full-time training in Taipei. There I got to know Andrew more and how to follow brother Lee absolutely.
In 1987, under brother Lee’s calling, I moved to Anaheim and was sent to Monterey Park to labor among the Chinese-speaking saints. Andrew was serving brother Lee then. I learned to serve the Lord by following brother Lee and the people he put in charge. Andrew was a great help to me. He was fair in treating us and was approachable, making one feel comfortable to talk to him.
Brother Lee was in Taiwan from 1984 to 1989. He came back to the States in 1989 and visited us in Monterey Park, accompanied by Andrew. Andrew was serving brother Lee at that time. Every time I went to see brother Lee, whether personally or as a group, Andrew was always present. Andrew served in the capacity of the general manager of the Living Stream. He was brother Lee’s personal assistant and confidant until brother Lee passed away in June, 1997.
Among us co-workers, I would say that Andrew was the one really knew brother Lee—his thinking, his plans, his desires, the way he would do things, and what he wished to accomplish. He knew how brother Lee felt, worked, and was constituted. After the Lord took brother Lee, Andrew continued brother Lee’s desires and wishes, such as translating some well-known Christian works into Chinese, establishing the church in Jerusalem, setting up Grace Terrace as a burial site for the saints, and more. In 2003, he went to New Jersey to help the Chinese-speaking saints and scholars consecrate themselves and serve the Lord in God’s ordained way. Every year he received a new burden from the Lord and shared it with us. Even after his strokes, which happened three times, he still was a leading factor in the annual New Jersey Chinese-speaking training. He completed the translation of the Collected Works of Watchman Nee into English and was the driving force behind the completion of the Collected Work of Witness Lee.
I believe many will share about his major contributions to the recovery. I just mention here the Andrew I knew. I can testify that all that he did was due to the fact that he was a God-man.
Until recently when he was really too weak to be with us for any length of time, he still provided encouraging words for us to go on. I really miss him. I believe that he is with the Lord resting in His presence. This was his desire. I am sure to see him again; we will all be in glory. Amen.
